Dr. Lommel, a Professor of Plant Pathology and Genetics, recently became Interim Associate Dean for Research in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and is the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies at North Carolina State University (NCSU). Dr. Lommel conducts research on plant virus pathogenesis, evolution, and taxonomy. Dr. Lommel’s research on virion structure and assembly at the molecular and atomic level has forged the path toward using small RNA plant viruses as nano-cargo vessels for the targeted delivery of therapeutics to cancer cells. He is also the Co-Director of the Tobacco Genome Initiative at NCSU. Dr. Lommel is the editor for the journal Virology and is on the editorial boards of four other scientific journals. He has published more than 100 peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, reviews and proceedings.

Dr. Lommel received his bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of San Francisco and earned his doctoral degree in plant pathology at the University of California, Berkeley. He went on to hold the position of Assistant Professor at Kansas State University and then joined the faculty at NCSU. He was Assistant Director of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences from 1992 to 2001.

Dr. Lommel serves as special scientific advisor to the US Environmental Protection Agency on the release of transgenic crops and also serves on numerous university, state, federal, and international scientific boards, committees, and funding panels.
